Hanging in the far end of the library where I work is a unicorn made of plastic wrap and packing tape. Surrounding it are three giant flowers made of butcher paper. Why? Because otherwise it is a huge, ugly, blank spaces. When the school year started, I asked the art teacher if she and her students could decorate that space. Using the school play, “The Glass Menagerie”, as a guide they crafted the incredible display. Unless you understand the why behind the arrangement it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Looking at it today, it made me think of the why behind some of my choices. Specifically why I choose to fight for hope in the midst of so much hard.
I fight because:
-I love my people. I want to be the best possible me for them.
-I have dreams that God has placed in my heart and I want to see what He will do through me and in me.
-I want others to know there is hope. Jesus gives me hope that it will not always be hard and I want to share that truth with anyone who needs it.
-There is profound joy to be experienced in this life and I don’t want to miss it.
-I know I will win the battle. Jesus says so and I believe Him. In the end, and even in the right now, we have victory through Him who conquered death.
Without my why’s, it would be hard to keep going. Some days the darkness is heavy and pervasive. My why’s remind me that the darkness is not the end of the story. And so I will continue to fight.
